Some institutions have recently witnessed a plummet in the number of students enrolling in science subjects. The issue of understating science in tertiary education stems from many reasons, and has caused noticeable consequences in society.
Concerning the root causes of the issue, there are many factors that should be considered. The first reason may be caused by the increasing popularity of many other subjects, such as Art, Business, and Media that are supposed to bring about the prestigious and financial reward in the future. In fact, people specializing in these fields, such as business founders, and celebrities are always referred to as having a successful career and financial stability. Consequently, they have driven the young to follow their footsteps. Another reason may come from inadequate orientations that the students receive when choosing their major. The fact is that many countries still have not paid enough attention to career orientation, and the inevitable result is that students are probably impacted by surrounding peers rather than choosing their own interests and aptitude.
Such a tendency in tertiary institutions had led to the remarkable effects. The converse effect that many concern is the unproportionate distribution in the workforce. When many follow appealing jobs and neglect the importance of science, it will lead to the employee’s abundance or insufficiency in some certain fields. For instance, the science fields, such as chemistry, astronomy may face the scarcity of labor while accountants, sales people are at the risk of unemployment. Secondly, it will hide the community from overall development. Without science professors and innovative research, there will be no scientific breakthroughs that will be necessary in some scenarios. Imagine that no one carries out medical investigation, people will face the fatal risk if a new pandemic, like Covid 19, occurs.
In conclusion, science’s underestimation can be attributed to the effect of successful celebrities and the lack of informative orientation. This has led to detrimental effects in terms of our job market and our well-rounded advancement.
