Band 8+: Nowadays parents put too much pressure on their children to succeed. What is the reason for doing this? Is this a negative or positive development?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

In many parts of the world, a lot of parents are placing increasingly more pressure on their children to push them toward academic excellence. This development stems from social and economic factors. While excessive pressure might lead to mental issues, it is highly beneficial if parents manage to strike a balance.

One major reason for heightened parental expectations is the competitiveness of today’s job market, fueled by globalization and technological advancements. As the new generations are forced to compete with their counterparts globally, it has become difficult to ensure a well-paid job without high academic performance. This, in turn, drives parents to force their children to excel at school and in extra-curricular activities. Another contributing factor can be the link between achievement and the family’s honor. Many parents, especially those in Asian countries, measure success by the number of diplomas children possess or how prestigious the university they attend. This approach inflicts even more pressure on children as their parents never fail to inform them how important their achievement is.

However, imposing such strict guidelines and forcing children to follow them might cause anxiety, depression, and feelings of isolation. This is because children might feel like they are constantly being judged and are not allowed to fail. Eventually, those children might start to feel misunderstood, which will erode their self-esteem. Instead, parents try to prevent this situation by striking a balance by allowing children explore their true interests while also not forgetting about their academic pursuits in various subjects.

In conclusion, it is understandable why parents want their children to excel in academic subjects, as this is driven by well-intentioned motives. However, its broader implications warrant scrutiny as excessive pressure might backfire and lead to burnout. Therefore, parents should be aware of this and support their children accordingly.
