Band 9: Nowadays people have expectations to get things instantly (news, products, services) and do not want to wait. Why? Positive or negative development?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

In today’s fast-paced world, the expectation for immediate gratification in obtaining news, products, and services has become the norm. This essay will outline the underlying reasons behind this phenomenon and argue that, overall, it represents a negative development.

One primary reason for the demand for instantaneity lies in the advances in technology. Innovations such as the internet, smartphones, and various digital services have accustomed people to receiving information and services at an unprecedented speed. For instance, news is now accessible in real-time through social media and dedicated news apps, contrasting sharply with the era when people waited for the evening news or the morning paper. By the same token, e-commerce platforms like Amazon offer next-day, and sometimes even same-day, delivery options, a stark difference from the traditional weeks-long waiting periods of mail-order catalogs.

Another factor contributing to the culture of immediacy is the competitive business environment. Companies, in an attempt to outdo each other, continually strive to provide faster services. This competition benefits consumers in terms of efficiency and convenience but inadvertently sets a precedent for instant satisfaction. For example, streaming services like Netflix have revolutionized the way we consume entertainment by allowing immediate access to a vast library of movies and shows, unlike the days of renting DVDs or waiting for weekly TV broadcasts.

In my opinion, this trend towards instant gratification is more of a negative. It has led to a decrease in the appreciation for the process and effort behind services and products. For example, the ease of downloading music has diminished the appreciation for the artistry and production work that goes into creating an album. Worse still, this demand for speed can lead to increased stress and anxiety, as people feel pressured to keep up with the relentless pace of information and services. Also, it can foster a culture of impatience, where the ability to wait and the enjoyment of anticipation are undervalued.

In conclusion, the expectation for instant gratification is understandable, given the technological and competitive business landscape. From my perspective, it is predominantly a negative development, considering that it undermines the appreciation for the effort behind products and services and contributes to a culture of impatience and constant stress.
