Advantage And Disadvantage

Band 7+: Nowadays, technology is increasingly being used to monitor what people are saying and doing. In many cases, people being monitored are unaware that this is happening. Do you think that the advantages outweigh the disadvantages?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

In recent years, it has become common for countries to monitor what citizens are saying or doing, even though many people still do not know about this ongoing situation. This essay weighs the benefits and the drawbacks before a logical conclusion is reached.

Critics of launching security systems to record may give several reasons to support their stance. First and foremost, everyone has their own rights to have privacy. When their actions and conversations get caught on cameras and recorded on phone calls on a regular basis, typically it contradicts the sense of privacy. On top of that, such surveillance may hinder people from managing their own lives, as this may undermine their independence and freedom by subjecting them to constant recording. Additionally, if hackers gain access to this information, it could compromise individuals’ safety and lead to far-reaching repercussions.

Nevertheless, these notions, in my opinion, are flawed, considering that the upsides are more significant. One significant benefit is its role in preventing criminal activities. Offenders such as burglars and drug dealers often coordinate through phone calls or in-person meetings, and surveillance tools can help detect and disrupt these interactions. In Uzbekistan, for example, more than 100 cases of illegal drug sales are uncovered each year thanks to hidden cameras and mobile tracking systems. Although public monitoring may seem intrusive at first, it effectively deters recidivism rates and strengthens public safety.

In conclusion, I believe that despite the downsides of monitoring residents’ verbal and behavioral activities, including hindering people’s privacy along with their freedom and independence, which might not let them manage their personal lives, such a policy plays a significant role in ensuring safety throughout the society. This can be done by placing hidden cameras in public places and also identifying suspicious conversations through phone calls.

With increasing technological advancements, almost every move of ours is being monitored. In many cases, people being tracked are unaware that this is happening.
