Some people believe that companies should provide sports and social facilities, such as gyms, sports fields or community centres, for people living in the local area. I partly agree with this view. In my opinion, companies can play a useful role in supporting local communities, but the main responsibility should stay with the government.
There are good reasons why companies should contribute to their local communities. Firstly, large companies often use local resources and employ local people, so it is fair that they give something back. For example, a factory which causes noise and heavy traffic [LO2.1]in a small town could build a sports field or a playground for local children. Secondly, this kind of investment can improve the company’s image and helps it to build good relationships with local residents, who may be its customers or employees in the future.
However, I do not think that companies should be fully responsible for these facilities. The main reason is that businesses exist for make a profit, so their support may not be stable. If a company has financial problems or moves to another location, the facilities may be closed, and the community will lose them. Moreover, some companies may use such facilities mainly for advertising rather than for the real helps of residents. Public facilities should be available to everyone, and only the government can guarantee this in the long term.
In conclusion, I partly agree that companies should provide sports and social facilities for local communities. It is a good way for them to give something back and improve their reputation. However, this should be an addition to public services, but not a replacement for them.
