Band 7+: Online shopping is increasing dramatically. How could this trend affect our environment and the kinds of jobs required?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

In an era marked by unprecedented development, the phenomenon of increasing online shopping has become strikingly evident. This trend may have certain impacts on the environment and demands for related occupations.

The rise of online commerce presents a multifaceted impact on the environment, characterized by both potential benefits and drawbacks. First, it is probably admitted that greater e-commerce would lead to lower energy consumption. In other words, were there to be fewer brick-and-mortar stores, less energy would be required for lighting, heating, and cooling commercial spaces. A case in point is BigC, one of the most renowned major retailers of the world, by requiring a great deal of energy, has led to the phenomenon of energy depletion. As consumers increasingly favor online shopping, the need for physical stores are diminished, enabling companies to consolidate operations into energy-efficient warehouses. Conversely, an increasing demand for shopping online correlates with the excessive utilization of packaging materials. Specifically, online orders often come with extra packaging to protect items while shipping, leading to more waste compared to traditional retail. Consequently, it would contribute to landfill overflow and elevated levels of plastic pollutants, ultimately posing a cascading effect on the environment.

The pervasive nature of online commerce presents a complex interplay of positive effects and disadvantages for individuals’ professional prospects. On the one hand, the rise of e-commerce generates a multitude of employment opportunities. Digital marketing specialists, for instance, by promoting products and driving traffic to e-commerce sites, has become a pressing job. This expansion provides new employment opportunities with diverse skill sets and backgrounds, contributing to job creation and economic growth. On the other hand, a trend toward e-commerce would inevitably result in job displacement within the traditional retail industry. As consumers gravitate towards online shopping, physical stores often experience reduced foot traffic and sales, leading to closure and layoff. The closure of various prominent clothing retailers in Vietnam serves as an illustrative example of the consequences of online shopping growth, exemplified by the burgeoning popularity of e-commerce platforms such as Shopee and Tiktok. This decline in major retail establishments can have detrimental impact on communities heavily depending on the retail sector, potentially leading to increased unemployment and economic hardship.

In conclusion, online shopping impacts the environment and the labor market in both positive and negative ways.
