It is an ongoing debate whether or not long-term job aspirants should engage in voluntary work to receive government benefits. This issue tries to balance between individual development and societal contribution.
Advocates argue that integrating individuals in volunteering aspects helps them as well as the society as a whole. Continuous participation in Volunteering will help individuals to stay connected to the environment. Continues learning and Skills development are another aspect of improvement in their lives. This activity and initiative will be another way to give back to society. Volunteering activities such as teaching to the youth in underdeveloped areas, helping people in need by providing them with necessities and designing change initiatives will help the society in some way.
Based on my experience volunteering with The Aga Khan Youth & Sports Board in Hyderbabad(India), Participating in volunteering work helps us grow as better individuals. It is our chance to change someone’s life by an act of service for society.
From the Individual’s perspective, forcing them to do voluntary work to receive government benefits might not be preferred by all the candidates. As everyone is different, with different mindsets and opinions. Not all Long-term job seekers would be interested in participating in voluntary work. After a 9 am-6 pm work schedule, many of these workers would be exhausted. Many would argue and demand a work-life balance. These individuals would rather spend their weekends with family to have quality family time.
In Conclusion, the question of whether long-term job seekers should participate in volunteering activities to enjoy the government benefits is debatable and multi-faceted. A balance between Community needs and Individuals’ rights will help us reach a middle ground to support voluntary work without any form of enforcement or mandate.
