Band 8+: Overpopulation in many big cities in the world is a major problems. What are the causes of this? To what consequences may overpopulation lead?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

There is a growing trend of an increasing number of residents in many big cities. While this shift can largely be attributed to a combination of rising birth rates and increasing lifespans, it also brings about serious social and environmental problems, including a scarcity of employment opportunities and the overuse of natural and non-renewable resources.

One compelling reason for the continuously rising population is the growing birth rate in large cities. Poor management of population growth, a lack of family planning, and viewing children as a source of income contribute to rapid increases in family size. This can lead to child labor, the depletion of natural resources, and heightened competition in the labor market. Additionally, the decline in mortality rates plays a significant role in population growth. Improved living conditions and advances in medicine in big cities have resulted in longer life expectancies. Thus, rising birth rates and increased lifespans are key driving forces behind urban population growth.

One of the most immediate consequences of overpopulation in cities is the emergence of severe social problems, particularly in the job market. With an increasing number of inhabitants and a decreasing death rate, more and more people struggle to find employment. The direct results of this are not limited to a lack of job opportunities; they also extend to difficulties in supporting extended families. Furthermore, these issues are not confined to high birth rates; they also contribute to various forms of pollution driven by the overuse of both organic and inorganic resources. As consumption levels rise, the demand for products surges, which leads to the extensive use of fossil fuels and ultimately depletes the Earth’s natural resources, leaving few reserves for future generations. From these perspectives, overpopulation in cities can have negative repercussions in terms of serious social and environmental challenges.

In conclusion, high birth rates and increased lifespans are fundamental contributors to the growing number of residents in urban areas. However, this growth can lead to far-reaching consequences, particularly the strain on natural resources and challenges in the job market.
