Owing to rapid urbanization, major cities worldwide are facing an acute overpopulation crisis. It has created numerous problems, such as road traffic, and homelessness. Governments should invest in building better public transportation systems and affordable housing for the common public to tackle these issues.
Firstly, traffic congestion leads to lower movement efficiency. It takes a longer time to reach the destination as more and more vehicles start clogging the road, especially during peak hours on weekdays. As a result of the population boom in cities, the congestion in major cities has risen significantly, making daily commutes nearly impossible for many people. For example, during peak hours in Mumbai, a 30-minute trip can take up to an hour or more. To reduce the traffic on roads, government should invest in a well-connected, robust, and efficient public transportation system. Additionally, public transportation should be subsidized to discourage people from commuting with a private vehicle.
Secondly, there is a major homelessness crisis in many cities. Owing to the ever-increasing cost of buying or renting a home in a city, many people have to resort to living on the streets. The homeless people have to live in worse conditions on the streets due to the government’s inability to provide them with proper housing. In my opinion, governments in all major cities should build affordable public housing programs to accommodate poor people who are unable to afford normal apartments in the city. Not only that, governments should also ensure that everyone has access to basic necessities such as food, clean water, healthcare, education, and employment opportunities. This can improve the lives of everyone in cities and reduce the number of homeless people in cities.
In conclusion, addressing the overpopulation crisis in urban areas requires a multi-faceted approach. Governments must prioritize investments in efficient public transportation systems and affordable housing to alleviate issues like traffic congestion and homelessness. Simultaneously, ensuring access to essential services and opportunities for all residents can lead to more sustainable and livable cities for everyone.
