Opinions are divided on the increasing amount of pressure that parents place on their children’s future success. In my opinion, this stems from both practical reasons and the parents’ pride, and has mostly negative impacts.
Parents’ increasing pressure on their offspring to succeed comes from two main factors. The first is that they want their children to have a good life, which, from their perspective, would require a successful career that have high earnings. With such financial conditions, the latter would be able to cover their own expenses, make investments, and care for their families. The other factor here is that many parents consider their children’s success as a source of pride. This is especially true in Asian countries, where parents can be viewed negatively if their children fail to have respectable careers or earn lots of money. On the contrary, the children’s success would serve as a testament to their parents’ methods, elevating their positions in the eye of others.
Although pressure from parents can act as a source of motivation, it is likely to do more harm than good. The most immediate problem is that it damages family dynamics, especially if children fail to live up to their parents’ expectations. In this case, the frequent tension can create an uncomfortable living environment for all family members, undermining their mental health and straining family bonds. Even more worrying is the long-term effect, as the children under constant pressure may mistake their purpose in life as only to appease their parents by achieving success. This can make them feel incomplete, living a life in which they feel empty and lost rather than one in which they are filled with happiness and motivation. After all, although success is important, it is meaningless if the children are unable to fully appreciate it.
In conclusion, parents are putting more pressure on their children so that they can have a good life, and also for them to feel a sense of validation. Despite the motivation it brings, this development is fundamentally detrimental, disrupting family harmony and causing unhealthy distortion in the children’s mentality.
