It is said that keeping animals for meat consumption is inhumane, and any types of meat should not be included in meals. While I partially agree with the statement, other aspects should be considered.
One of the main reasons why I believe that people should not kill animals for food is that animals are sentient beings. They can feel pain like humans. Killing animals for meat consumption causes an unnecessarily rising animal mortality rate daily. Therefore, animals should not be killed by humans and live with dignity. Moreover, a lot of farming systems lack audits. Many animals are kept in poor environments, and some farming systems don’t meet hygienic standards, which possibly makes the livestocks get diseases leading to low quality meat.
On the other hand, meat consumption remains necessary for many people because it provides essential nutrients that are difficult to replace completely. Meat is rich in protein, iron, vitamin B12, and other nutrients that are important for physical growth, energy production, muscle development, especially in children and young people. Although plant-based diets can be healthy, not everyone is able to rely on them alone without careful planning. If people do not receive enough key nutrients, they may suffer from nutrient deficiencies or even malnutrition. In addition, certain nutrients associated with brain health, such as omega3 fatty acids, may be harder for some individuals to obtain in sufficient amounts without animal-based foods. Therefore, despite ethical concerns, meat continues to be a practical and important part of the diet for many people.
In conclusion, it is true that raising and killing animals for food can be cruel, particularly when they are kept in poor farming conditions. However, I believe that meat consumption is still necessary because it provides essential nutrients that are not always easy to replace through a plant-based diet alone. Instead of eliminating meat entirely, governments and farming industries should focus on improving animal welfare standards and ensuring more human treatment.
