Band 7+: Population in cities is growing rapidly. What are the effects of this? What solutions can gou give to maintain a good quality of life in urban areas?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

In recent years, there has been ongoing debate over the impacts of growing population manifestation in metropolitan areas and how to maintain the living standards of citizens. Although this concern shows numerous beneficial effects, I suppose that there are several far-reaching consequences. This essay will examine the effects of this trend, along with viable solutions to maintain residents’ quality of life.

One major effect of rapid population growth in cities is overcrowding. This is because more people move to urban areas, the demand for housing increases, leading to higher property prices and rental costs. Therefore, financial pressure on privileged groups, particularly low-income residents, makes it tougher for them to afford suitable accommodation. Additionally, densely populated areas often suffer from heavy traffic congestion and air pollution, which can detrimentally affect people’s overall well-being and increase stress levels. It can be apparently seen in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh city, considered extremely crowded, especially during rush hours, creating a nightmare for citizens in these two cities.

Another significant impact is the pressure placed on public services and infrastructure. For instance, hospitals, schools and public transport systems may become overstretched, resulting in longer waiting times and reduced service quality. In Africa, city dwellers may face delays in receiving medical treatment or experience overcrowded classrooms, which can lower many aspects in their life, and also their overall living standards.

To combat these challenges, both governments and stakeholders should consider various remedies. A prominent strategy is raising awareness of how addressing these negative effects of rapid population growth is crucial. This can transform from awareness to a specific course of actions. Another effective approach could be to invest more in public transport, parks and affordable housing projects to ease congestion and reduce living costs. By adopting these measures, urban centers can remain liveable despite concerns about population pressure.

Ultimately, while rapid urban population growth creates several challenges for citizens, governments and individuals with concerted efforts, including effective planning and investment, the negative impacts can be minimized.
