Recently, it has been observed that more and more individuals tend to move to urban centers which are already overcrowded. In my view, this trend brings substantial drawbacks, notably more intensified competition in the job market and severe city pollution.
First and foremost, people believe that mega-cities can offer better career prospects. Job seekers move to the larger cities as they need higher salaries but often they end up accepting low wages. Thus, newcomers collapse the local labour market as the companies decrease average salaries because of them. This negatively affects the local residents’ incomes, making it harder for them to keep stable jobs. For example, in Moscow an influx of migrants took the workplaces of native residents and left them with lower wages or even without jobs.
The other negative consequence of this tendency is contamination and pollution of mega-cities. Sanitation issues could be worsened by a sudden increase in the population. Many urban centers already struggle with a high amount of household waste. Therefore, city authorities may not be able to cope with all garbage and that would make megacities even more densely polluted. That means that the pressure on the infrastructure would be a more serious problem. For instance, in New York, which is a megacity with a constant increase in the number of inhabitants, even the subway is severely polluted with litter which led to rat infestation.
In conclusion, I strongly believe that individuals should stop the tendency of moving to overpopulated centers as they cause serious competition in the job market and increase the pollution.
