Road accidents and deaths have become frequent occurrences in recent years. To tackle this, some people think drivers should take driving tests regularly, not just once. I believe, although there may be demerits, this idea has potential to considerably mitigate the issue.
Primarily, regular driving tests can help to reduce driver complacency by reminding drivers of the importance of safe driving practices. This can be especially important for drivers who have been driving for many years and may have become overconfident behind the wheel. For example, in Delhi drivers are required to renew their licenses every 5 years.
Additionally, repeat driving tests can provide drivers with an opportunity to identify areas for improvement and work on becoming safer drivers. This can be especially helpful for drivers who have received feedback on their driving skills, such as from a driving instructor or a police officer. For instance, my friend took repeat driving test and got feedback from authorities to maintain safe distance from other vehicles and be more careful about pedestrian and cyclists.
Nonetheless, repeat driving tests can be a source of stress and anxiety for drivers, especially those who are not confident in their driving abilities. This can lead to a negative experience for drivers and may even affect their mental health. For example, my neighbor had to take repeat driving test and she was worried about failing the test. So she couldn’t concentrate on her work for a week.
In conclusion, while there are valid concerns about the negative consequences, I believe the merits like improved road safety and updated driving knowledge are significant benefits that can save lives and reduce accidents.
