In the upcoming years, it is one of the emergent progresses that cars and other motorized vehicles are projected to be driven automatically by computers. From my perspective, this phenomenon is likely to involve more benefits than shortcomings.
There are several drawbacks triggered by this development. One of the main disadvantages of autonomous cars is that they will exert an adverse consequence on employment rates of commercial drivers. There is little doubt that these people will be subject to the process of redundancy by manufacturing companies when autonomous cars develop into the favored preference. This raises a more pressing concern when unemployment rates proliferate, one of which is the increasing social burden placed upon the government. Considering the unprecedentedly fast development of car technology in recent years, such a scenario is likely to occur in the foreseeable future.
However, those disadvantages as inevitable factors accompany a handful of more significant benefits behind this innovation. Firstly, increasing government expenditure will be allocated to groundbreaking advances in robotics technology. The advent of autonomous cars is a strong testament to a foreseeable scenario in which the jobs previously undertaken in form of manual labour will be substituted by technological applications. Soon enough, automation will evolve into a ubiquitous presence in our daily life, handling a variety of tasks including driving. In addition, given that traffic accidents are on the rise, especially in densely populated cities, self-driving cars could be the holistic approach to reduce car incidences of collision by ruling out the possibility of human emotions and errors. It is true that the majority of traffic accidents come from situations where speed or alcohol is involved, which would not be the case if cars are operated by computers.
In conclusion, the emergence of driverless cars will be detrimental to employment in the transportation industry and translate into further pressure on the overstretched governmental system. Nevertheless, I am convinced that at the expense of those adversities, road safety will be enhanced and advancements in the era of technology will be achievable.
