Band 8+: Should more surveillance cameras be set up in public places?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Nowadays, the use of surveillance cameras in public areas is a highly debated topic. While some people believe that increasing CCTV coverage is essential for public safety, others worry about its impact on personal privacy. In my opinion, cameras play a vital role in fighting crime, but a proper balance must be achieved.

On the one hand, there are clear benefits to installing more cameras. For instance, they act as a powerful deterrent. Criminals are much less likely to commit illegal acts if they know they are being recorded. Furthermore, when crimes do occur, video footage provides crucial evidence for the police, helping them catch suspects quickly. Consequently, citizens generally feel safer walking through the city.

On the other hand, widespread surveillance raises serious privacy concerns. Many people feel uncomfortable with the idea of being constantly monitored during their daily routines. In addition, there is always a risk that this sensitive data could be misused or hacked. Therefore, it is essential to have strict laws regarding who can access these recordings.

In conclusion, although surveillance cameras can feel intrusive, their ability to prevent crime and protect the public outweighs the drawbacks. In my view, expanding CCTV networks is a positive step, provided that citizens’ privacy rights are fully respected.
