Since ancient times, parents have used different physical punishment methods in order to discipline their children in various aspects. They claim that smacking children is one of the best ways to do it. This essay will argue why I am completely opposed to smacking children in order to make their behaviour more suitable for their existence in society.
It is true that parents have always been wary of the behaviour of their children, as it is an essential factor in their well-being. The fact is that they are justifiably worried about the impressions of outsiders about their children’s behaviour and always want to make their children the best without any mistakes. For instance, parents want their children to be calm, quiet and eat foods with good table manners on special occasions such as weddings. Is it correct to do so just because they behave against their desires? Indeed, according to a research study in South Asia, 44% of adults physically punish their children at different social gatherings. These few examples have depicted the existing attitude of the old generation about smacking to build a self-disciplined younger generation.
On the other hand, there are various acceptable methods to make children aware of their own mistakes and make themselves disciplined rather than punishing them physically, which is completely preposterous. A kind word of advice can entirely change a child’s mind into a positive behavioural change without hurting their little impressions, despite making them feel scared and angry towards their adults. A good piece of evidence for this is that when a child who faced a lot of physical punishments in his or her childhood grows up and comes into society one day, he or she always tries to be aggressive and spread violence towards children. However, due to the long-lasting bad effects of childhood punishment memories, the whole society can be badly influenced.
In conclusion, this essay argued that people who promote smacking children as the most suitable way of discipling have a flawed understanding of children’s mindsets and underestimate the effects of what they believe. In my opinion, even though the basement is to raise a well-disciplined child, I totally disagree with the concept of committing physical violence against children.
