Band 8+: "Social media has a mostly negative impact on young people. To what extent do you agree or disagree?"

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

It is often argued that social media has a harmful impact on young people. I partly agree with this statement because, while social media has some negative effects, it also offers several benefits.

On one hand, Social media allows people to connect instantly, no matter how far away they are. This is especially beneficial for people who live far from their families and friends. Social media helps them stay in touch and maintain close relationships despite the distance. For example, my cousin got married and moved to another country, so she cannot visit her family often. Thanks to social media platforms such as Facebook and Instagram, she can stay in touch with her family and feel less lonely.

on the other hand, one negative effect of social media is the unhealthy comparison people make with others’ lives online. This is very harmful because it can lead to negative outcomes such as depression, anxiety, and dissatisfaction with one’s life. Especially when a person lacks self-confidence and self-awareness, they can easily fall into the trap of unhealthy comparisons. For example, a teenager from a middle-class family who follows a famous football player with a mansion, luxury cars, and a lot of money might start feeling dissatisfied with his own life and become depressed. In extreme cases, he may even do dangerous or illegal things to earn money and become rich like that player.

In conclusion, although it is true that social media has a negative side, such as unhealthy comparisons that can lead to serious mental health issues, I believe that it also provides advantages like communication and connection with people around the world. Therefore, its overall effect depends on how people use it.
