With the advancement of transportation means, international travel has fostered through the years. While it has negative impacts on the environment, number of benefits are observed, as we will discuss below.
Admittedly, overseas travel has drawback of carbon emissions from air and land travel, which consumes a significant amount of fuel. Consequently, these emissions increase the unwelcome effects of greenhouse gases and air pollution in conurbations like New York and London, for example. Another detrimental impact on the environment is unquestionably the lack of waste management produced by the excessive number of travelers and the poor systems implemented by local authorities. For instance, India was one of the most visited countries in 2023 and due to the lack of employees working to classify and recycle rubbish produced, parts of New Delhi have been undermined by piles of dumps and lost their cleanliness over the years.
Conversely, the advent of green and sustainable energy has become a main factor in overcoming the harmful usage of petrol-used conveyances. Countries like Japan have already carried out policies such as promoting electric cars and trains to promote environment friendly vehicles for travelers in order to decrease the use of energy which emit carbon. Moreover, while some countries are facing an alarming amount of waste owing to the growing number of visitors, developed countries like Norway and Sweden effectively recycle and reuse litter, and it was reported that by the end of 2024, 90 percent of commodities were recycled, which clearly indicates that proper management procedures and promotions can make a difference.
Overall, overseas travel has both benefits and drawbacks on the environment we are living in, however, the disadvantages of greenhouse gases and waste can be efficiently managed by means of sustainable vehicles and waste management systems.
