It is a common belief that installing CCTVs in areas with high crime rates will help to reduce crime. Therefore, advantages outweigh disadvantages because it makes easy to monitor suspects or criminals.
On the one hand, adding CCTVs will lead the high costs in the region. If the government implement the plan providing CCTVs in high crime areas, this would try to use public funds. This means that it would increase the tax of citizens so it would make conflicts between the government and citizens. For example, citizens may complain about the incline of bills because they would feel that reducing crime rates is not related with their life. Also, some people would feel their privacy is disrupted by the government.
Nevertheless, offering CCTV’s in dangerous area will help to watch suspects or criminals in those areas. It is very convenient because it is easy to report people who are suspicious or committed something illegal by just watching camera lens. This leads the incline of numbers of the witness. However, unless CCTVs are located in those areas, it is difficult to gain evidence or traits of criminals. For example, in Seoul, reporting incidents was doubled after a month of installing CCTVs.
To sum up, while there is a disadvantage that CCTV requires lots of money to the public. However, it is evident that it is valuable for the reduction of crimes calling the more polices or 911.
