Band 8+: Some children spend hours every day on their smartphones. Do you think this is a positive or a negative development?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

In contemporary society, a pervasive trend amongst young individuals is a considerable duration is devoted to their smartphones. While this phenomenon has the potential to boost digital literacy, its detrimental aspects are manifold, ranging from decreased cognitive ability to dwindled attention spans. On balance, this essay posits that an inordinate amount of screen time is a predominantly negative phenomenon.

First and foremost, the constant immersion in virtual realm contributes to diminished interpersonal skills and eroded cognitive abilities. To be specific, with prolonged electronic devices usage, adolescents become increasingly socially isolated from their immediate surroundings, depriving themselves of face-to-face communication. Consequently, they may grapple to decipher nonverbal expressions and navigate the intricacies of social interactions. Additionally, in order to keep users engaged and online, social media algorithms tend to curate content that aligns with individuals’ pre-existing beliefs, insulating from dissenting opinions and alternative perspectives. Thus, this insularity stifles productive discourse and fosters a distorted view of reality.

Furthermore, dedicating inordinate amounts of time to smartphone screens takes a toll on children’s physical and mental well-being, as it leads to a decline in physical activity and social interaction. For instance, prolonged smartphone utilization can contribute to an increased risk of developing musculoskeletal issues in children, such as text neck or texting thumb, on account of maintaining an unhealthy posture while using the devices. Moreover, allocating substantial time to digital devices also has a deleterious effect on teenagers’ mental health, leading to depression, anxiety, and other loneliness in consequence of the dearth of face-to-face socialization and meaningful conversation.

Admittedly, some claim that increased exposure to personal electronics fosters digital literacy, empowering the younger generation to navigate the intricacies of the digital landscape in a quick and efficient manner. However, these benefits are often compromised by the pernicious effects on their ability to concentrate. Juniors become increasingly accustomed to rapid information intake and may struggle to remain focused on longer, more in-depth tasks or materials. Moreover, digital platforms offer immediate gratification and incessant stimulation for captivating the attention of impressionable minds, which renders them incapable of focusing when things in the real world are not as captivating.

In conclusion, it is opined that the deleterious repercussions of prolonged screen time for youths far overweigh its advantageous ramifications in terms of cognitive capabilities and overall well-being, albeit its potential enhanced digital literacy.
