In the modern world, smartphones have become ubiquitous, leading to a situation where many children in the digital native generation spend long hours every day on these digital gadgets. I believe that this is a completely negative trend because it harms children’s social skills and health.
On the one hand, spending too much time on handheld devices hurts children’s ability to communicate in real life. Today, many young people immerse in extended periods of virtual socialization through social media or games, so they spend less time talking to people around them. This leads to diminished interpersonal skills because they do not have enough practice with body language, listening, or talking directly to others. For example, many children feel shy and do not know how to start a conversation with classmates when they meet face-to-face, because they are used to chatting through phone screens. As a result, hindering face-to-face social interaction skills makes it harder for them to make real friends and causes them to feel lonely in real life.
On the other hand, using portable electronics for many hours every day causes serious physical and mental health problems. This habit creates a sedentary lifestyle because children sit inside all day instead of playing sports or doing outdoor activities. Being inactive like this can exacerbate problems like weight gain, eye damage, and poor sleep quality. For instance, many teenagers who play mobile games late at night often suffer from sleep deprivation and struggle to stay focused during class the next morning. Moreover, staying online for too long can slow down their cognitive development and lead to mental health issues.
In conclusion, although smartphones are popular in daily life, using them for hours every day is a dangerous habit. It not only damages children’s real-life communication skills but also compromises their physical and mental health.
