It has become increasingly common for children to spend extended hours on their phones on a daily basis. While this can be attributed to the lack of parental control and unlimited access to social media, I view this development negatively as it can adversely impact children’s physical and mental well-being.
One main reason behind children’s phone addiction is that parents often do not pay adequate attention to their children. This is because most adults have busy schedules which makes it impossible for them to fully take care of themselves, let alone their children. This lack of parental supervision has contributed to an increase in the amount of time children spend on leisure activities, such as browsing the internet, playing online games, and engaging in online communication. Excessive use of phones has increased the possibility of children’s reliance on digital devices. Another contributing factor is limitless access to social media . Recent years have seen a marked rise in the popularity of digital communication platforms, such as Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook . These social media sites attract millions of children all over the world. Children are often distracted by these platforms which contribute to the overuse of mobile devices, further leading to even more severe issues such as phone addiction. This habit often negatively reflects on the classroom engagement of school students, lowering their academic performance.
I believe this shift is a negative development for two key reasons. First and foremost, those who overuse mobile devices often tend to have mental issues such as stress, depression, and sometimes even hallucination. Children often follow various influencers on social media who often show their lives in a better picture than it is in real life. This illusion of idealized social media lives can lead to mental breakdowns of teenagers and reduce their self-confidence, causing them to have less social engagement. This decline in interaction often prompts children to feel stressed and depressed. This leads to further severe actions, such as committing suicide.
Another disadvantage is that it can increase the possibility of health problems. Because of poor posture when using digital devices, children often tend to have various physical issues, such as backaches and postural imbalance. Furthermore, when children spend extended hours on their phones it can cause a decline in physical activity. This lack of movement leads to imbalance between daily calorie intake and energy expenditure, resulting in weight gain.
To conclude, the reasons behind children’s excessive smartphone dependency are decreasing parental attention and limitless usage of social media. The increasing popularity of phones among children has a negative impact on their physical and mental condition.
