Band 7+: Some countries spend a lot of money preparing competitors to take part in major competitions such as Olympic Games or football World Cup. Some people say that it would be better to spend this money encouraging children to take up sports from a young age. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

There is a common belief that governments should spend less money on preparing professional athletes for major international competitions and instead encourage children to participate in sports from an early age. Although I acknowledge that professional athletes can bring pride and recognition to their countries, I believe that encouraging children to do sports is more beneficial in the long term.

The primary reason why I agree with this view is that sports can play a paramount role in improving children’s physical health. In other words, regular physical activity can help children become healthier and reduce the risk of developing health problems in the future. A good example of this is children who take part in activities such as football, swimming or athletics from a young age. As a result, they can develop healthy habits and maintain a more active lifestyle as they grow older.

Another important reason is that investing in children’s sports can help discover talented athletes in the future. In other words, if children have access to sports facilities and professional training, some of them may develop their abilities and become successful professional competitors. For instance, a child who starts playing football at an early age may improve their skills over time and eventually represent their country in major competitions. As a result, governments can still produce successful athletes while also improving the health of the wider population.

To sum up, although spending money on professional athletes can help countries achieve success in major international competitions, I believe that encouraging children to take up sports from a young age is more beneficial because it improves their health and can help discover talented athletes in the future.
