It is true that internet access is restricted in some nations to protect their citizens. Personally, while this trend has some valid downsides, I strongly agree that the advantages outweigh the drawbacks for several reasons.
Admittedly, it is undeniable that this restriction presents certain disadvantages. The main reason is that this regulation sets a limitation on accessing to documentation. There are plenty of sources of information all over the world. If goverments prohibit the access to these resources, students or researchers can encounter some problems such as the lack of reliable data. Another concern is that some business people may face difficulties on their businesses if global Internet access is blocked. These groups will not sell their products globally. For example, sellers may be unable to advertise on e-commerce platforms such as Amazon or Alibaba. Therefore, their revenue can be decreased. However, these problems could be mitigated if governments block toxic pages only instead of a wide range of websites.
On the other hand, despite the aforementioned disadvantages, I am convinced that this trend brings many benefits. Firstly, this restriction provides a protection to vulnerable groups of residents. Specifically, children are rarely taught enough safety skills when using the Internet. Cyber scammers usually exploit children to gain profits. For instance, children may be persuaded to join malicious groups and their information are then stolen for sale. If these risky pages are blocked, the online environment will be safer for residents, esspecially for children. Secondly, this solution helps to prevent cyberscams. These days, people use online platforms to purchase goods. Scammers create fake websites and lure people to provide sensitive information. For example, old people sometimes can not distinguish real from fake, thereby, being easily trapped. Restricting access to these websites is a smart strategy to protect citizens.
In conclusion, although setting a limitation on internet access sometimes brings some disadvantages because it causes the lack of information. I firmly believe that there are more advantages than drawbacks, such as providing protection to children or deterring online scams.
