Who is responsible for transporting children to school has been an ongoing topic. While some believe that school transportation should be the responsibility of parents, some contend that this is the government’s duty. This essay will discuss both views before concluding with my opinion.
On the one hand, opponents argue that schools and governments should organise school transport. They believe that this will positively impact the environment since fewer private cars on the road. Moreover, parents often experience fatigue due to the demanding nature of their role. The responsibility of parents can lead to excess stress, which in turn causes mental and physical health symptoms. This can be attributed to stress and emotional strain that parenting can cause, the guilt of not being able to complete all, and the need to balance work and family life. If local authorities organise buses for children to travel to school, it reduces parents’ workload. Furthermore, this type of transport enhances overall child safety, as fewer vehicles on the road would reduce traffic accidents.
On the other hand, proponents of this position argue that parents should be responsible for school transport. It is believed that other societies’ members should be penalised for the children of others. Implementing a network of buses and public transport to schools would be a large burden for the public taxpayer system, diverting funds from important sectors, such as healthcare, public infrastructure, and housing. Therefore, it is claimed that each parent should contribute to the associated costs.
In my opinion, the solution lies in the collaboration of multiple stakeholders. Local authorities set up and partially fund the public school transport system, with the remaining money being subsidised by the parents. Such measure reduces the vehicles on the road, benefiting other individuals.
In conclusion, transporting children from home to school is a complex and expensive task. Hence, I believe that the responsibility should lie on both parents and the local authorities. With their collaboration, the benefits for children and the environment would be enhanced and come at less cost.
