Social harmony has always been essential for a prosperous life. Thus, to accomplish it some people consider solving local issues more important while others believe that it is global problems that is more necessary. Although I understand why some people find solving international issues more essential, I support those advocating the importance of local matters.
On the one hand, many problems today are interconnected, and require international cooperation, thus ignoring them may harm everyone, including the domestic population. This stems from the fact that some global problems can be dealt effectively only internationally. This is due to the fact that some problems can be dealt fast and efficiently if discussed and solved globally since collaborative efforts of different countries can ripe desired results more effectively, complementing weak points of each other. Collaboratively addressed pandemics in 2019-2020 because of COVID-19 can illustrate it well, which showed that diseases can spread in an unprecedented pace and lead to fatal consequences if not addressed with international efforts.
On the other hand, national well-being should come first, as governments are primarily accountable to their own citizens. Resources in many countries should be allocated as meaningfully as possible for they are limited. This is mainly because in many countries there are more than enough problems with unemployment, poverty, education and healthcare, which are all crucial components for citizens’ lives. Therefore, prioritizing international aid or global causes before tackling national issues may seem illogical and waste of local resources as reaching national happiness, well-being and harmony is the main responsibility of a country.
To conclude, people’s opinions on the importance of national and international issues vary. While some people think that it is crucial to cooperate internationally to tackle global matters because of its effectiveness, I consider that focusing first on local issues is more important for a harmonious life.
