There are wide and controversial views on whether music is only practical for entertainment or plays an essential role in human lives. In this essay, both perspectives will be examined, and ultimately, I will represent my perspective.
On the other hand, many people believe music is just an instrument musicians play to entertain the audience. Besides, the artist attracts people with their performance and their voice. Eventually, people are satisfied when they watch their favorite artists perform. It keeps individuals happy seeing their idol and makes them busy doing fun activities. For example, during holidays, a concert tour in several countries shows some famous artists such as Adele, Beyonce, and Taylor Swift. People will take it as a chance to attend concerts to fill their spare time; the music will entertain them and have fun during the concert until it is over. Moreover, they got an excellent opportunity to meet their favorite musicians exclusively at the shows.
On the other hand, it is very lucid and clear that the primary function of music is to influence our physiology in a way that helps protect against cognitive decline. Recent studies suggest that music may enhance cognitive function and promote healthy aging. For instance, playing a musical instrument throughout our lives is associated with a lower risk of developing dementia. This has been attributed to the ability of musical training and performance to increase the brain’s resiliency.
In my view, music provides us with more than entertainment. Music has brought meaning and value to people across all cultures and historical periods than just about anything else. Moreover, music is a way of expressing our feelings and emotions. Based on recent research, it is proven that music can reduce the amount of stress and release dopamine, known as the feel-good hormone. Also, music is highly effective in treating especially those who suffer from mental health diseases and depression. So, in a nutshell, music plays an essential role in people’s lives.
To conclude, despite its function, we should consider the importance of music on our feelings and health, too.
