Band 8+: Some people believe celebrities should use their fame to solve social problems, while others think they should focus only on their careers. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

The exploitation of celebrity status has become a contentious issue globally. While some argue that prominent figures should leverage their fame to address pressing social issues, others believe their primary focus should remain on their professional pursuits. In my opinion, I partially concur with this sentiment, acknowledging both the potential benefits and drawbacks.

There are compelling reasons why celebrities should utilise their influence to alleviate social problems. Firstly, their fame can be instrumental in raising awareness about crucial issues such as health concerns, women’s rights, environmental protection, road safety, and anti-bullying campaigns. This proactive approach can empower citizens to gain a deeper understanding of these problems and potential solutions. For example, speeches delivered by well-known personalities often command greater attention from audiences. Furthermore, celebrities’ involvement in charitable and humanitarian endeavours can be pivotal in addressing social causes. They frequently donate substantial sums of money, establish foundations, support education in underserved communities, provide aid during natural disasters, and promote health awareness. Their extensive reach on social media platforms enables them to mobilise significant donations within a short timeframe.

Conversely, there’s a strong case to be made for celebrities prioritising their careers. By excelling in their respective fields, they can disseminate their culture globally, transcending national boundaries. Through films, athletic performances, and even their personal style, they can introduce their traditions, language, and fashion to a wider audience. This can be an effective means of fostering international understanding and cultivating a positive national image. Moreover, focusing on their professions can significantly contribute to both national and global economies. Their films, concerts, sporting events, endorsements, and brand promotions generate billions of dollars. Entire industries, such as Bollywood, Hollywood, sports leagues, and the fashion industry, rely heavily on celebrities. Their popularity creates employment opportunities for numerous individuals, including producers, coaches, stylists, photographers, editors, designers, and marketers. This economic activity strengthens a nation’s financial stability and enhances its global standing.

In conclusion, I firmly believe that celebrities should prioritise their careers while simultaneously using their influence to mitigate social problems. While leveraging fame to address social issues is crucial for raising awareness and bolstering charitable efforts, it is equally important for them to focus on their careers to stimulate economic growth and promote their cultures.
