Nowadays, the topic of hosting multinational sports events has sparked considerable debate. Some people think that such events can be beneficial for the country, whereas other individuals believe that it is a bad idea to organize large events. However, I firmly believe that hosting large events can bring more harm than benefits. The reason is that while these events can generate short-term economic benefits, long-term risks often outweigh any possible advantages.
On the one hand, hosting an international event can significantly boost a nation’s economy and provide employment opportunities. Large-scale events frequently attract tourists and foreign investors, all of whom will contribute positively to the country’s revenue during the event. Governments often invest their resources in building new infrastructure such as roads and parks, particularly stadiums. Likewise, creating space for tourists often increases demand for human labor, thereby large companies need to recruit people to complete construction projects. For example, the FIFA World Cup in Qatar transformed the country’s economic situation and helped mitigate problems with unemployment for 6 months. Hence, huge events enable governments to reduce unemployment rates, helping entrepreneurs to make a profit from their investments.
On the other hand, large-scale events can also result in several environmental issues such as soil pollution. The reason is that governments, people, and businessmen often forget about the consequences of their actions. During the events, people buy some snacks and beverages which are packaged in polyethylene. In this case, after these types of events individuals often overlook waste and let garbage accumulate in one spot without proper disposal. In addition, this phenomenon creates significant problems such as soil degradation because plastic has a negative impact on the quality of the soil. As a consequence, the country will face difficulties related to farming and could hinder farmers from growing crops such as quinoa, rice and wheat. A prime example is Brazil, which hosted the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. Subsequently, the authorities reported a sharp decline in the quality of the soil in farming plantations near stadiums and parks. This was caused by inaccurate disposal of waste.
In conclusion, hosting international events can bring benefits related to the country’s economy and also increase its reputation among other nations. However, the consequences which stem from its organization, such as soil erosion, outweigh any advantages of this phenomenon.
