The issue of crime presents one of the major problems of modern world. Some people believe that additional measures should be considered in order to increase law-abiding behavior, while others question the effectiveness of such actions. In my opinion, further criminal prevention efforts are necessary, however, they must be thought through carefully.
It is fair to say that the level of illegal activity can be lowered by enacting extra policies. Even though advanced technologies, such as CCTV cameras, speed radars and other equipment, assist the prevention of crime to some extent, law violation may still occur. Supplementary measures may be required not to avoid first-time crime, but primarily for diminishing reoffending and for the rehabilitation of criminals. For example, if offenders are given an opportunity to retrain, it would ensure their reintegration after release and improve public safety.
Nevertheless, illegal activity is already being addressed with a majority of established laws, the impact of which some people can question. It may be associated with the problem that crimes can still be committed in poor regions or by individual, struggling with mental health issues. This leads to idea, that criminality cannot be dealt with properly, if general economic and social problems receive less attention. Another concern can be connected with the potential misuse of power by people in authority, while bringing new laws, and an increase of false accusations.
To sum up, the question whether the authorities should give more consideration to diminishing crime remains a double-edged sword. Without a doubt, the government should be able to create a safe environment for population, but ultimately, the responsibility for one’s actions lies with each individual.
