Nowadays, crime has become a major issue in many societies. While some people believe that criminal behaviour is mainly caused by poverty and social problems, others argue that crime is the result of individual’s bad character. This essay will discus both views before presenting my opinion.
On the one hand, people who cannot afford their basic needs may commit crimes to survive. For example, some individuals steal food to feed themselves or their families. This happens because when people are poor, they do not have other ways to get money for food, clothes, or shelter. In addition, some people may steal money or sell things illegally to pay for their families or themselves. Drug addiction is also a social problem that can lead to crime. People who are addicted need money to buy drugs, and sometimes they commit robbery or other illegal actions to get it. Therefore, poverty and social problems can make people turn to crime.
Nevertheless, crime can also happen because of a person’s behaviour and character. Not everyone who is poor becomes a criminal, which shows that personal choices are important. Some people commit crimes even if they have money or a good job. For example, wealthy people may be involved in fraud or corruption because of greed or bad moral values. This shows that crime can come from a person’s bad character, not only from social problems.
From my point of view, both poverty and bad character can cause crime, but poverty and social problems have a stronger effect. People who grow up in poor conditions often have fewer opportunities for education and work, which can push them to commit crimes more than people with bad character alone.
In conclusion, crime can happen because of bad character or social problems like poverty and drug addiction. I believe that poverty and social problems are the main reasons for crime because they make people do illegal things to survive.
