Band 8+: Some people believe that advertising encourages us to buy things we do not need. Others say that advertisements tell us about new products that may improve our lives. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Some people argue that adverts manipulate consumers to purchase unnecessary items, while others say that they offer helpful product information. I personally support the latter view.

There are several reasons why people might argue that advertising deceives consumers into buying things that they actually do not need. Firstly, advertisements generate artificial needs. Companies use strong marketing methods in order to persuade individuals that they need products even if they do not. For instance, many people buy the newest iPhone as soon as it comes out, even though their current phone still works perfectly. Secondly, many business entities often use famous actors, actresses and athletes to advertise their products. Consequently, people may buy these products simply because they admire those celebrities.

However, I support those who believe that ads provide useful information about products. The main benefit of advertising is that it helps consumers learn about new products. When a new good is released, adverts provide the public with a lot of fruitful facts about it. Furthermore, advertising helps small businesses attract consumers, which increases sales and builds reputation. For example, when people start a new business, advertising informs others not only about their goods but also about the company itself and its purpose. In my view, ads are not only important for informing people, but also for small companies to grow their businesses and strengthen their reputations.

In conclusion, advertising certainly has its drawbacks, but I believe that the benefits outweigh them in the long term.
