Band 7+: Some people believe that all students should learn about climate change and sustainability, while others argue this is not necessary. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

There are those who argue that all students must be educated about sustainability and climate change, but there are those who don’t understand why this is necessary. Let’s examine both arguments before I give my own.

On one side of the argument, most think it’s crucial for students to be educated on climate change and sustainability. This is because the environmental issues we face today are extremely severe and will only become worse in the future. When teenagers learn the reasons why climate change occurs, as well as its consequences, they’re more apt to act and make responsible decisions. Sustainability education can also educate them on how to live sustainably in a way that conserves natural resources — say, by recycling, conserving energy, or investing in environmental-friendly products. It’s basically preparing them to be good global citizens.

Some counter that schools are already packed with curriculum subjects and that environmental education would add further burdens to both pupils and teachers. They could add that subjects such as global warming should be left to the university level or addressed through public information campaigns. Others may sense that climate science is too complicated or controversial in certain communities, and students should learn more about fundamental subjects such as mathematics, science, and language.

Personally, I think that educating students on climate change and sustainability is not only crucial — it’s imperative. It doesn’t mean schools must introduce additional classes, but that the issues of the environment can be incorporated into current subjects such as science, geography, or social studies. Equipping young people with the knowledge and means to address the climate crisis is one of the most valuable investments we can make in their future — and the world’s.

In summary, although there are those who fear adding more to students’ agendas, my opinion is that it is imperative that we know about climate change and sustainability. The sooner we begin to teach the future generation, the more equipped they will be to save the world they’re entering.
