Advantage And Disadvantage

Band 6+: Some people believe that children at secondary school should be streamed, i.e. taught in classes according to ability, rather than being taught in mixed-ability classes. Do you think the advantages of streaming children at secondary school outweigh the disadvantages?

There is a view that streaming should be involved in secondary school, as it divides students according to their abilities, simultaneously making mixed-ability classes disappear. While this trend entails certain drawbacks, they are outweighed by the benefits.

One concern regarding students’ stream is lack of competition. Since students who have better knowledge are moved to other classes, others may feel that there is no one to compete with. This inflicts in loss of motivation, making them vulnerable to unstable mental state. It is observed that these juveniles have a tendency to commit crimes in further life. Another downside for exchanging students between different classes is lower assistance levels. Pupils with broader knowledge occasionally assist others. This builds a lively atmosphere amongst students, inevitably leading to better cooperation rates.

A major advantage for dividing students according to their marks is bigger progress. Students with low marks are served as deterrent factor for skill development. For example, pupils who used to spend less time studying in their previous groups now improved their grades dramatically.

Equally important is high-efficient teaching. Teachers who teach in classes with same level of academic abilities find it easier to fully describe the topic. This is because no time is spent to repeating the information twice.

In conclusion, streaming inflicts in certain drawbacks such as lower competition and cooperation levels. However, they are far outweighed by the benefits like better progress and higher efficiency.
