Advantage And Disadvantage

Band 4+: Some people believe that children at secondary school should be streamed, i.e. taught in classes according to ability, rather than being taught in mixed-ability classes. Do you think the advantages of streaming children at secondary school outweigh the disadvantages?

Streaming children for different classes according to their abbilities becomes a popular practise among teaching institutions worldwide. As for me, outweighting advantages of streaming are undenaible, hovewer, there’s some relevant cons we need to consider as well.

The main problem of so-called mixed classes lies at the core of the definition. For many students being taught with underperforming or overperfoming collegues might be very frustrating. Suggesting a pupil with high cognitive abbilities had got into class compossed from middle-ranged or even low-abbility children, he or she could struggle with their educational goals due to bullying. This in fact was a common scenario I witnessed during my own school experience. My highly inteligent friends were descriminated because of their score outperformance and even because of their manners. On the other hand, lover-estimated individuals could behave ill-manerly as a way of protest against system. In a long run, teachers would give more attention for more cappble and perspective children, while underscored would stay in a shadow of their bad-reputation labbel.

On the other side, streamed classes are unintentionaly designed to fix this problem. First of all, from my own experience I can say that after high-school allocation all bullying and discrimination were simlpy gone. Of course, such aproach hadn’t solved all problems and hadn’t significantly enchanced students’ scores, though it had given a sence of relaxation for us. As for teachers, it was much easier for them to find more convinient and relevant approach for all streamed classes separately. Nonetheless, many schools do not prefer streaming due to restricted cappacity of education system and governemnt ressources. In other words, the main argument against streamed classes would be shortage of personnel.

In conclussion, while mixing is more convinient to sustain, its disadvanteges are obviously greater that advantages of allocated approach. I highly support streaming not only at higher school, but from all over the beggining.
