Band 7+: Some people believe that consumerism is good for countries, whereas others argue that it has negative consequences. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

There is a debate in society regarding the positive and negative impacts of consumerism on states. This essay will discuss both sides in the following paragraphs.

First and foremost, there is an underlying assumption that consumerism has several positive impacts that are beneficial for states. When people consume more, the country’s economy tends to grow rapidly. Not only do big companies have wide opportunities, but small businesses can also easily thrive. Many inventions can result from this trend, leading to faster country development and economic growth. For example, the increase in economic development opens up various job opportunities.

On the other hand, it is undeniable that consumerism has some negative impacts on the country itself. Excessive shopping can be harmful to the environment when people buy more than they actually need, especially in large quantities, as seen in impulsive shopping. The high consumption rate leads to a high waste rate. Therefore, instead of making impulse purchases, people need to consider the environmental effects of their actions.

In my opinion, although consumerism has both positive and negative aspects, the consequences depend on how society manages their consumption behaviors. It can be beneficial for countries as long as society avoids overconsumption. However, it can pose environmental risks when waste becomes excessive.

In conclusion, consumerism has both benefits and drawbacks for states. To ensure that the impacts are positive, it is crucial for society to manage their consumption behaviors wisely. I recommend that people shop conscientiously and remain open to new sustainable living approaches.
