There are different opinions that tests are a good way to measure the abilities of students, whereas others thing that continuous assessment is a better method to use. In my view, both exams and continuous assessment are effective, as they assess different aspects of a student’s ability.
On the one hand, some people think continuous assessment lets students get feedback immediately. This method gives students tasks (Quizzes, homework) and deadlines. The teachers will explain mistakes, and where they need to work. This encourages pupils to not fear mistakes, which is fundamental for education, as the fear of failure stops them from asking questions about what they didn’t understand. For instance, in Kazakhstan, students are also assessed through coursework, presentations, and projects, which can help teachers evaluate their practical skills.
On the other hand, exams are an objective way to grade one’s ability. Tests are the same for everyone, with questions of the same level based on what they have learned. Another advantage of exams is that they allow teachers to see students individual abilities. While projects are collaborative, exams are usually completed independently, so students cannot rely on the help of others. Therefore, this group supports that teachers can get a clearer idea of what each student literally knows.
In conclusion, I think both tests and regular assessments, are necessary for students. Both methods are useful for understanding different aspects of student’s abilities, and tests can help demonstrate what they have learned.
