There is an opinion that pupils who want to attend college should be wholly subsidized by authorities. I completely disagree with this notion for the reasons outlined below.
It is understandable why some think that governments should make universities free of charge for students who enroll in universities. A key rationale is that this idea can allow almost every student to access universities freely and comfortably, resulting in a more educated workforce. However, this line of reasoning is not sound, since it can put a strain on the fierce competitive workforce as it is. As a result, it could lead to a noticeable rate of unemployment, which may result in tax hikes, budget deficits, and reduced welfare among others. Therefore, the provision of free-of-charge tertiary education seems to be counter-productive as it can exert some negative influences on the economy of a nation.
Furthermore, I opine that students should pay for their higher education fees. This is predicated on the assumption that students who can afford the university fees are more inclined to study in earnest and apply themselves to getting good grades. My personal experience is that when my brother was in his first year at the university, he often skipped classes and exams as he believed that failing did not cost him anything since the local governments paid for his university fees. However, after having to shoulder the responsibility of paying for his higher education fees, he was more likely to study harder and did not skip classes anymore, resulting in his better academic performance at the university. My friends and neighbors also shared the same experience and they felt positive that paying full course fees during the time they learned in the universities could allow them to obtain better academic performances.
In conclusion, I am of the opinion that students should pay the full course fees when they study in college as it can help them concentrate more on their studies, and the government coffers can reap financial benefits from this idea.
