Band 9: Some people believe that in order to reduce crimes, prisoners should be given longer prison sentences while some people think there are other alternative ways. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

It is incontestable that criminal conduct remains one of the most persistent barriers to societal progress and welfare. To address the ongoing prevalence of crime, one school of thought advocates for extended imprisonment terms, while another supports alternative countermeasures. This essay will examine both perspectives before concluding that a multifaceted approach is needed to tackle crime comprehensively.

Proponents of prolonged incarceration emphasize its importance in deterring serious crimes. First, extended custodial sentences can promote behavioral rehabilitation. Modifying ingrained criminal behaviors and thought patterns is a gradual process that cannot be rushed since inmates need sufficient time to unlearn antisocial behaviors and adopt lawful conduct. Therefore, long-term imprisonment provides an opportunity for structured rehabilitation through psychological counseling, vocational training, and moral education, all of which lead to a reformed mindset among prisoners. With sustained commitment, these correctional programs can aid inmates’ reintegration into society. Additionally, lengthy prison terms can act as a strong deterrent to both ex-convicts and potential offenders by making them reconsider the severe penalties of illegal activities. In reality, some US states with harsher sentencing laws, such as California’s “Three Strikes” policy, have seen a reduction in violent crimes, illustrating the efficacy of severe legal consequences in discouraging repeat offenses.

However, others contend that crime prevention can be achieved through alternative avenues, specifically awareness education and better social welfare policies. Regarding the former, governments should launch public awareness initiatives to educate the populace, particularly the younger generation, about the legal and social repercussions of committing crimes. Accordingly, these campaigns cultivate a culture of lawfulness and discourage criminal tendencies among the youth. In conjunction with raising public awareness, it is also imperative that appropriate socioeconomic policies be implemented to mitigate the factors that drive individuals toward crime. Specifically, financial aid and vocational training should be given to disadvantaged communities to reduce economic desperation and unemployment rates, which often trigger criminal activities. This approach exemplifies the effectiveness of social relief policies in curbing the propensity for crime, further underscoring the role of preventive strategies.

In conclusion, I believe that each of the presented measures has its respective merits. While long-term incarceration primarily acts as a punitive measure that fosters criminal rehabilitation, heightened awareness and social welfare policies can curb crime rates proactively. Therefore, a two-pronged approach would be pivotal to combating crime comprehensively.
