Band 8+: Some people believe that in order to reduce crimes, prisoners should be given longer prison sentences while some people think there are other alternative ways. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

The debate over whether harsher prison sentences are necessary to reduce crime remains contentious. While this argument certainly has its own merits, other less punishing measures can also prove to be efficient in decreasing crime rates.

On the one hand, longer sentences or heavier penalties for a criminal charge as a whole serve as a great tool to prevent people from committing illegal acts by posing a significant consequence on their own lives. This forces the average citizen to think more carefully about their every action, aligning their moral compass and actions to the law they abide by. In theory, this is all a state would ever need, as a fear of punishment would be deeply ingrained in its civillians. However, the lack of means to help inmates reintegrate into society after decades of isolation can be detrimental. Specifically, freed prisoners will be released with little knowledge about the outside world, often being left unable to function as a normal citizen simply because the world has changed beyond recognition during the time they served.

An alternative to prolonged incarceration is rehabilitation programs, which not only prevent the issues associated with long-term imprisonment but also foster reintegration. These programs aim to provide the convicts with a chance to repent and compensate for their wrongdoings, cutting their ties with any illicit organisation and, most importantly, equip them with the skills necessary to maintain a lawful life. If done correctly, these reform programs can be more efficient in reducing crime, as they frequently work in tandem with investigators to bring down entire criminal organisations at a time, whilst preventing recidivism.

In conclusion, while harsher prison sentences may deter crime, they fail to address the underlying causes and can hinder reintegration into society. This can be alleviated through the use of re-education camps, which combine legal punishment with education and support, ultimately leading to a reduction in crime.
