Band 9: Some people believe that in order to reduce crimes, prisoners should be given longer prison sentences while some people think there are other alternative ways. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Reducing crime is a major concern for governments worldwide, and opinions differ on the best way to achieve this. Some believe that increasing prison sentences is the most effective way to deter criminals, while others argue that alternative measures, such as rehabilitation and social reforms, address the root causes of crime more effectively. This essay will examine both perspectives before explaining why a combination of strict punishment and preventive measures is the best approach.

Supporters of longer prison sentences argue that they serve as a strong deterrent, discouraging potential offenders from committing crimes. The logic is simple—if criminals know they will spend decades behind bars, they may think twice before breaking the law. Additionally, keeping dangerous individuals locked up ensures public safety, preventing them from harming society. Countries with strict sentencing policies, such as Singapore, often report lower crime rates, which suggests that harsh punishments can be effective. Moreover, longer incarceration periods provide authorities with more time to rehabilitate prisoners, increasing their chances of reintegrating into society successfully.

However, others believe that simply locking people up for longer periods does not address the underlying reasons why crime happens in the first place. Many offenders turn to crime due to poverty, lack of education, or substance abuse. By tackling these root causes, societies can reduce crime rates more effectively than by imposing harsher sentences. For example, Norway focuses on rehabilitation and skills training for inmates, which has led to one of the lowest reoffending rates in the world. Additionally, alternative punishments like community service or electronic monitoring can be more beneficial for non-violent offenders, allowing them to contribute to society rather than becoming institutionalized.

While longer prison sentences may help deter crime and keep dangerous criminals off the streets, they are not a complete solution. Addressing social issues such as poverty and education, along with offering rehabilitation programs, can prevent crime from occurring in the first place. Therefore, the best approach is a balanced one—combining strict law enforcement with effective social policies to create a safer and more just society.
