There are individuals of the opinion that prisoners should have their sentences prolonged in order to reduce crimes rate. In contrast, some suggest that there are still multiple alternate actions. These opinions will be discussed in this essay, along with my personal thought on the matter.
On the one hand, there are multiple rationales that help support the claim that prisoners should stay in jail much longer to reduce crimes. By prolonging the serving time, fear can be sown into a person mind about whether they should commit a crime or not. To be precise, jail sentences nowadays are less terrifying because of how a criminal can get out of jail really soon, which depend on how they act during their serving time in jail. While some prisoners are really commited to changing, there are still prisoners who put up an act only to get out quicker, then proceed to go down the same path again. Therefore, making the serving time longer will result in a significant reduction in crime activities because less people will want to be stuck in jail and forfeit the chance to meet up with their beloved.
On the other hand, opponents of the contrast opinion claim that there are more ways to resolve this instead. Criminals can be made to work in environment that have high risk of affecting the workers’ health. For instance, they can be sent to work as miners in caves that are slightly more dangerous than normal. This way, not only they are not obliged by any prison’s rules and can roam freely, but they are still punished by what they have done. Additionally, they can yield much more minerals or fuels, such as iron, copper, or coal, compared to normal miners because of the amount of labour they are compelled to do. Not only that, corporations and companies don’t have the obligation to pay them because this is still a punishment for what they have done. Therefore, the economy can benefit a lot if this regulation is legalized in the future, and criminals are not obliged to stay in jail and can meet their friends and family.
In conclusion, I believe that each action will benefit different countries based on their situation. Nations with high crimes rate should prolong prisoners’ sentences, restraining them from any contact with society or outside world in order to reduce as much crimes as possible. Whereas if it’s a country with low crimes rate and undeveloped economy, they should find alternatives to make use of the criminal, such as making them labourers that contribute to the country’s financial ability.
