Nowadays, while part of society are calling for teaching only core materials in tertiary education, opponents and I hold the belief that they are supposed to have the freedom to choose their field of study. This essay will illustrate both viewpoints and claim that pupils should be free to select their careers.
On one hand, supporters of obligatory fields of study believe that the prime reason for studying is to get the young individuals ready for future jobs. This is why they are ought to concentrate only on scientific and technological subjects in order to have the required set of skills, that will help them to succeed in their professional life. For example, in Egypt, the government decided to close art colleges because their graduates have no chance in the job market. Moreover, individuals who graduate from these establishments form a heavy burden to economy, because they will need subsidies.
On the other hand, learners will feel restrained when they are prevented from learning what is interesting to them. In other words, if they were forced to learn what they dislike, they will probably fail. For instance, Ahmed Amin, who is a famous comedian in Egypt, failed to graduate from college because his parents forced him to study engineering instead of acting. Furthermore, although studying science and technology is important, diversity in fields of education is required for community well-being.
In conclusion, after discussing the above-mentioned points of view, it could be reiterated that while proponents prefer colleges to provide the studying materials that benefits students in the future and help economy, other people and I believe that everyone should be free to decide what to study. This is because people have to like what they learn in order to succeed and to be useful socially.
