Traffic jams and pollution are increasing with every passing year in big cities, a solution which people think is making public transport free of cost. Although making it free does not guarantee that everyone will switch from private to public transport, it certainly would encourage more people to do so. In my opinion this can be a great initiative that the government can take as a step towards reducing pollution because it will make a large population shift from private vehicles to public transport as well as reducing both jams and pollution.
One major reason that makes me believe that public transport should be free is that it will attract middle class workers who want to save daily commuting cost going to and from office, it might also attract people with low income and students who are always on a tight monthly budget often having a minimal amount of money to spend on daily commuting which is a troublesome amount for them. It will have significant benefits for people who are on a tight monthly budget making them save more with each passing day. For example, university students often have a complaint that the pocket money they receive is less and a huge portion of that is spent going to and from university leaving them with little money eventually making them cut on daily personal costs.
Another reason is pollution and traffic jams in big cities. People using their private vehicles cause a traffic jam daily eventually leading to people being stressed-out on whether they will be late for work and some might try to rush out which might cause an accident. Traffic jams can be troublesome for emergency situations for example an ambulance or the vehicles of politicians or army vehicles. For example, it is often noticed that during peak working hours and if there is a medical emergency, in that case an ambulance gets stuck in the traffic jam and does not reach the hospital on time leading to loss of precious human lives. Therefore if the majority of people start using public transport, roads would be less jammed, in emergency cases there won’t be any delay for ambulances to arrive and people would reach their offices on time.
To conclude, in my opinion the government should make public transport free for the public as it will reduce traffic jams and pollution and has a lot of advantages in the daily life of people.
