Band 8+: "Some people believe that public transportation should be free for everyone. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?"

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Public transportation plays a vital role in modern cities, helping to reduce traffic congestion and pollution. While some argue that public transport should be free for all, I believe that it is impractical and unsustainable, and instead, subsidies for certain groups would be a better approach.

On the one hand, making public transportation free could encourage more people to use it, thereby reducing traffic and environmental pollution. For instance, cities like Tallinn in Estonia, where public transport is free, have reported a significant increase in ridership and reduced private car use. Moreover, free transport would benefit low-income individuals who rely heavily on public services for their daily commutes.

On the other hand, offering free public transportation is not financially sustainable. Maintaining and upgrading transport systems require significant investment, which would ultimately be borne by taxpayers. For example, in countries with large populations like India, making transport free could place an enormous burden on the government budget, diverting funds from other essential sectors like healthcare and education. Additionally, overcrowding could become a serious issue, leading to a decline in service quality.

In my opinion, public transport should not be entirely free but should be heavily subsidized for students, the elderly, and low-income groups. This approach ensures affordability for those who need it most while maintaining the quality and sustainability of the transport system.

In conclusion, while free public transportation has its merits, I believe a targeted subsidy program is a more practical and equitable solution. This balances affordability and quality without overburdening government finances.
