In this revolutionizing world of today, the assertion that suggests students should learn practical skills like managing bank accounts and maintaining cars rather than just being school smart, who only learn conventional subjects, has come out. From my point of view, I totally agree with this statement, and the reasons are shown below.
On the one hand, studying traditional subjects such as Mathematics and History is a must for all humankind. It is undeniable that the skills we learn from traditional subjects play a pivotal role in our daily lives. For illustration, the basic mental arithmetic skill that we have learned for years at school does help us when we need a spontaneous sensation with numbers, such as paying bills or bargaining. Moreover, people learn from the past. Studying history is indeed helping generations to learn from the mistakes and misbehaviors of the ancient human being. While the great wisdom of humans is also hidden in the stories that are included in the textbook.
On the other hand, only studying traditional subjects at school does not help a student with his self-reliance. Sometimes people overlook the paramount importance of learning practical skills. Using my personal situation for an example, when I had just graduated from high school, I realized that I didn’t have any ideas about the banking stuff. I needed to ask for aid because I don’t know how to open a bank account, and neither does everyone else. This phenomenon should be attributed to the lack of practices of real-life works at school. To develop a generation with abilities to live independently and smartly, governments shall spare no efforts on implementing new courses that allow students to learn practical skills at school at an early age.
Besides, we can easily see those high achievers of traditional education are often called nerds. What is the problem behind this? This is good food for thought. In today’s world, students are unbelievably lacking in creativity and curiosity. In some cases, such as a car breaking down, teenagers surely have no idea how to deal with it. Ergo, it is necessary for schools to involve more and more practical works like car maintenance to offer students opportunities to save themselves in emergencies.
All words in one, I highly believe that practical skills and traditional subjects share the fair amount of importance. Practical skills should not be the substitute for traditional subjects, while they should be an addition.
