Some people may say, that technological discoveries have improved our lives, while the others might contradict that point by saying, that these advancements have decreased our life quality. In this essay, I will discuss both views of this controversial issue before going on to state why I agree more with the first point of view.
Technologies were created for people by other people, so that the time of usual processes in modern society is shortened, thus people can work more and live their day-to-day life more effectively. Apparent from the time saving aspect, modern technologies might actually improve the quality not only of ordinary people’s lives, but also of the scientific sphere. New discoveries might be life-saving, life-changing, help to create new solutions in the other spheres. Only seventy years ago you would need to go by foot to your local library for getting the material for your homework, but now you don’t need to do all this—all the answers are behind the screen.
Those who say, that technologies have worsened the state of a human’s life, talk a lot about the ecological and ethical aspects of it, the discussions of which cannot be swept under a rug. Technologies are bad for our ecology due to polluted air, water, sometimes even soil. Speaking of the ethics, the supporters of this opinion often mention AI, how new technological discoveries might replace a person, which could lead to structural unemployment, where only those working in the tech would be needed. I think this question can be regulated by people themselves—can we really trust a robotic doctor, lawyer, builder with our lives, or should people be allowed to continue working in their professions without the fear of the replacement?
Overall, I can say, that technological advancement caused a lot of development for humanity. The shortcomings, attached to these achievements, deserve to be discussed, and the awareness to be raised. However, as a community, we can reduce these disadvantages, while developing the technologies in favour of humanity, not against it.
