In today’s digital age, technology plays an integral part of our daily lives. While some people argue that it is technology that is causing isolation and disconnection between individuals, others reckon that it is actually strengthening the social connection. From my perspective, I concur with the opinion that the advantages technology brings about can outweigh the disadvantages.
To begin with the benefits, the most obvious one is that people nowadays are able to connect with each other on a global scale regardless of geographic locations in a shorter time span, which completely differs from the past when a person had to wait for some weeks or even months to send or receive letters or packages. To illustrate, using social platforms, like Facebook or Instagram, allows users to expand their social circles by sharing their interests and hobbies. Besides communicating, video games and virtual reality enable players to actively engage in various social activities and different experiences in many parts of the world.
Despite several positive effects, there are arguments that technology use is making people more and more solitary, which is likely to detrimentally affect realistic relationships. This is because the rise of social media sites and online communication tools has resulted in a clear decrease in face-to-face interactions; consequently, users tend to immerse themselves in their own digital worlds, limiting their physical interactions. More specifically, the “Out of Sight, Out of Mind” research states that the less regular a person sees someone, the more that person will stop thinking about the other. However, this problem is caused by irresponsible overuse of online media, so it can totally be controlled with better awareness.
In conclusion, even though there are some certain consequences of careless use of technology, I am convinced of the beneficial outcomes on human interactions.
