Band 7+: Some people believe that tourism promotes the economy while other argue that tourism destroy the environment. Discuss both views.

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

In the modern era, the tourism industry is one of the largest industries worldwide. There is a growing debate among people regarding this sector, with some arguing that the tourism industry significantly contributes to economic growth, while others contend that it causes environmental degradation. This essay will explore both perspectives before offering a balanced view.

On one hand, it is worth noting that the tourism industry sustainably fuels the economic growth of a country. For instance, a significant number of travelers visit tourist destinations to immerse themselves in the rich culture and natural beauty, leading them to spend money on accommodations, food, and transportation. Additionally, this sector creates employment opportunities for local people. For example, a survey conducted by The Daily Star Newspaper in 2022 revealed a substantial decrease in unemployment in tourist areas like Cox’s Bazar in Bangladesh, with the unemployment rate dropping to 10%. A decade ago, the area had an unemployment rate of around 65% due to a lack of job opportunities. Therefore, it is evident that the tourism industry not only boosts economic growth but also enhances employment.

On the other hand, critics argue that tourism can lead to environmental unsustainability. The excessive use of transportation by tourists can result in carbon emissions, leading to air pollution. Furthermore, the rapid expansion of tourist infrastructure often results in habitat destruction and deforestation. Research conducted by psychology professor Sara Khan from Dhaka University highlighted that many logging companies have cleared numerous trees to build hotels and motels for tourists at popular destinations. Moreover, tourists often disregard the preservation of natural sites and end up causing harm instead of following the guidelines to protect them.

In conclusion, despite the potential drawbacks, tourism can drive economic growth by leveraging its attractive features. At the same time, environmental threats can be mitigated through government intervention and increased awareness among tourists.
